Tabu is an effective insecticidal drug that is aimed at destroying pests of nightshade crops. The poison enters the pest’s intestines and blocks the nerve endings. As a result, insects lose the ability to move and feed. To prepare the working solution, it is important to follow the instructions for using Taboo for the Colorado potato beetle.
Composition and release form of the drug Tabu
The main active substance that acts against the Colorado potato beetle is imidacloprid, which belongs to the class of neonicotinoids. Concentration 500 g/l. This means that a liter of disinfectant contains 500 g of poison.
The chemical composition of the poison also includes the following additional components:
- wetting agents;
- antifreeze;
- dye;
- thickener.
Tabu can be purchased in large and small quantities in the form of an aqueous suspension concentrate.
Pour into the following containers:
- 1 and 5 l canisters;
- bottles of 10 or 50 ml.

Reference! Determining the volume of the container is not difficult. For example, 10 ml of the drug will be enough to pickle 120 tubers.
You can distinguish processed potatoes by their pink tint, which is imparted by the dye contained in the Tabu preparation.

Operating principle
The prepared solution is used to treat the planting material to prevent further damage by Colorado potato beetles.
How does the etching agent work:
- A dense pinkish film appears, which even external environmental forces cannot destroy.
- With the germination of tubers, the poison passes into the cells of young shoots.
- So the future tops will already be saturated with imidacloprid and will become poisonous to pests. Young fruits are reliably protected.
- In insects that attack the green part of nightshades, the functioning of the nervous system is disrupted. Complete immobilization and starvation ensues. A few hours later, the Colorado potato beetle dies.
The duration of the Taboo is about 45 days. That is, until a pair of real young leaves grow.

Advantages and disadvantages
Like any insecticide, it has its positive and negative sides.
Among the features are:
- the pest dies after 20-24 hours;
- the drug works not only against the Colorado potato beetle, but also against wireworms and aphids;
- lack of phytotoxicity (you don’t have to worry about crop poisoning);
- clear instructions;
- beetles do not get used to the poison, so the product can be used next year;
- the drug can be used both for treating tubers and tops;
- thanks to the dye, the treated area of the beds is clearly visible;
- rain, heat or frost will not affect the effectiveness of Taboo.

There are quite a lot of positive aspects. But despite this, there are also disadvantages that are worth knowing about. Taboo is quite expensive. For example, a 1-liter canister will cost about 1,000 rubles. Also, small bottles have an inconvenient volume for preparing a solution.
Instructions for using the remedy for the Colorado potato beetle
There are two ways to carry out the procedure - tuber disinfection and treatment of holes before planting the tubers. Each method of work must be considered separately. The main thing to remember is that when spraying tubers or the green part of the bushes, the weather should be dry and windless. After all, the main feature of the drug is the formation of a protective film, which must have time to dry.
Treatment of tubers before planting
Spraying with the drug Tabu for the Colorado potato beetle is carried out only after shoots 1 cm in size appear. The treatment is carried out 2-3 hours before planting.
Preparation of working solution:
- add 8 ml Tabu to a glass of water.
- Pour the solution into a liter jar and fill to the top with water.
This amount of mixture is enough to process about 100 kg of sprouted potatoes.

Ask a Question
Important! If you plan to process more than 100 kg of tubers, then you should correctly calculate the dose. To do this, the weight of the seeds is divided by 100 and multiplied by 8. For example, you need to spray 250 kg, then the formula is: 250:100×8. You will need 20 ml.
Principle of operation:
- Spread the planting material on oilcloth in one layer.
- Spray using a spray bottle.
- Turn over to the other side and process again.
- The potatoes will turn pink.
- Allow to dry until a stable protective film appears.
If the potatoes are large, then it is recommended to first cut them into halves (before sprouts appear). Since fresh sections cannot be treated with the product.
Treatment during planting of tubers
This method involves processing the holes where the planting material will be placed. This will significantly save time for every gardener.
To treat potatoes against the Colorado potato beetle, the solution is prepared as follows:
- fill a liter jar with water;
- add 4 ml of Tabu and mix;
- Pour 10 liters into a bucket and fill with water to the top.
This is enough for holes on 1 acre of garden. To obtain the correct dosage, you will need to take into account the following formula: to obtain the volume of water, multiply the number of hundred parts by 10, and to obtain the Tabu dosage, multiply the number of hundred parts by 4.
Spraying principle:
- Place potato tubers in the prepared holes (furrows).
- Sprinkle with freshly prepared solution, at the rate of 30 ml for each potato.
- Bury with earth on top.
Harvesting cannot be done for 2 months. During this time, all the poison will pass into the tops.
The same method can be used to spray potato tops. Many gardeners doubt whether bushes can be treated superficially. In fact, the effect is excellent; the main thing is to start treating as soon as the first pests appear on the foliage or stems of young shoots.

How to fight with folk remedies?
These methods of fighting the beetle are suitable for small potato plantings.
And there are also gardeners who do not use chemicals in the fight against harmful insects and fungal plant diseases. The disadvantage of home methods is that the beetle does not always die after spraying, but leaves the area.
Product name | Description and method of application |
Tobacco (shag) | The leaves contain a toxic substance - nicotine, which is poison for the Colorado potato beetle. Pour 200 g of dry tobacco into 10 liters of boiling water. After two days, the solution is ready for use. Nicotine is not deposited in tubers at all, so tobacco can be used to spray potatoes. |
Ash | It is used in several ways. Dry wood ash is used to pollinate potato leaves. Consumption rate - 1 kg per 10 sq.m. Also put a handful of ash 20-30 g when planting in the hole. Dry ash in a volume of 200 g is diluted in 10 liters of water and used for spraying on the leaves. |
Sawdust | Sprinkle the ground around the bushes with fresh pine and birch sawdust every two weeks. |
Mustard and vinegar | Pour 1 kg of mustard and 100 ml of 9% vinegar with water and leave for two days. Process the tops. |
Walnuts | Prepare an infusion of fruits, shells and leaves. Leave for 5 days. Use for spraying. |
Sagebrush | Use 200 g of tops per 5 liters of hot water. Treat the potato field by spraying the infusion. |
Elecampane | Chop 100 g of elecampane roots and pour boiling water over it. Leave for two days and spray the poison. |
Precautions for use
It is important to remember that the drug Tabu against the Colorado potato beetle is a poison, which, if certain precautions are not followed, can become dangerous not only for insects, but also for humans.
Things to remember:
