Mosquito repellents
The situation is quite familiar when a warm summer evening is overshadowed by an unpleasant mosquito squeak, preventing us from resting. But the most unpleasant thing is that after the bites of these unpleasant insects, a person’s skin becomes incredibly itchy and itchy. Often, it is not possible to hide from annoying vile bloodsuckers, either on the street or even indoors. Moreover, there is a whole category of people in whom banal mosquito bites can cause real allergy attacks!
Naturally, most of us, when faced with such a problem, begin to actively look for means to combat annoying blood-sucking insects, asking questions: what plant repels mosquitoes, what is better than spray or ultrasound against mosquitoes, etc.
Today's arsenal of poisonous agents against flying blood-sucking insects is incredibly diverse. Today, it is permissible to use antediluvian gauze or mesh attached to windows or even doors. Moreover, grids in the modern world come with a special magnetic tape.
Also today you can find a fly swatter racket that kills a mosquito with an electric discharge, electric or ultrasonic agents, aerosols and rubbing, which can be quite effective for this problem. Today, in fact, we would like to consider which mosquito repellent in the outlet will be the most effective.
What means of getting rid of mosquitoes exist?
Fortunately, the days when getting rid of mosquitoes consisted of stretching regular gauze over a window or dousing yourself in clove oil are finally over. Today, to eliminate unpleasant insects, it can be more than enough to simply plug a very small, convenient device into an electrical outlet - called a fumigator - after which life immediately begins to improve. One question remains open: how safe will this “miracle of technology” be for humans?
But, before considering the main advantages and disadvantages of fumigators, we also suggest finding out what mosquito repellents exist. For example, you should understand that any means that save us from mosquitoes can be divided into two large classes. These are the means:
- Which repel blood-sucking insects.
- Which kill insects.
In professional terms, the first group of products is called repellents, and the second, which kills insects, is fumigators.
The term repellent itself comes from the Latin word repellents, which means “repel” or “drive away.” This group of products consists of natural or chemical substances, but not destroying the mosquitoes themselves, that force an adult mosquito to look for other food.
Gardex mosquito repellents
Today, repellents can be produced in various forms - they can be applied to the skin or simply to clothing. In addition, all repellents, according to their principle of action, can be divided into contact and non-contact.
Non-contact ones are designed to affect the mosquito receptors that usually perceive odor. Contact ones begin to work only when insects come into contact with human skin or treated clothing, when a person protecting himself with such means simply becomes not very tasty for the mosquito. Modern repellents can be found in the form of soft creams, emulsions, aerosols or lotions.
The second group of products is called a mosquito fumigator, when the term itself comes from another Latin word fumigare, meaning “to fumigate” or “to smoke.” These products simply kill unpleasant insects with poisonous vapors or smoke; in addition, these products can have a very specific range of action, beyond which you cannot feel protected from mosquitoes.
Repellents
Repellents can be a lifesaver for three to four hours. However, they all contain harmful toxic substances. For example, DEET - diethyltoluamide: this chemical compound was invented in the USA in 1946 to protect the army from insects. The consequences of its use are delayed and unpredictable; use is especially harmful for pregnant women and children. 17% of DEET enters the bloodstream, so repellents should be applied to clothing, but never to the face or hands. The higher the DEET content in the bottle, the longer the product protects against mosquitoes, but the more toxic the substance is to humans. If you apply the repellent to clothing, the drug lasts longer: 10–15 days; between wears, clothing should be stored in a sealed bag.
Know-how: portable self-spraying repeller for outdoor recreation. It is attached to clothing and creates a “protective cloud” around a person due to its unpleasant aroma for mosquitoes. One cartridge lasts for 12 hours, but can be used continuously for no more than four hours.
What is a fumigator?
Fumigator
It turns out that today there are several varieties of mosquito repellents such as fumigators. One of the most common and most popular among modern users can be considered a very small device that is plugged into an electrical outlet.
Typically, a special plate is placed in such a device, which, when heated, begins to emit vapors that are harmful to mosquitoes. In addition, the active ingredient for the fumigator can also be presented in the form of a bottle with liquid. This mosquito repellent is deservedly considered one of the most effective.
It must be said that sometimes on the market you can find fumigators created in the form of spirals, which should be set on fire before use. In this case, the spiral, smoldering, will spread around itself unpleasant smoke that is harmful to blood-sucking insects. Popularly, such a product may also be called a mosquito lamp, since lamp-shaped stands can often be used to hold such spirals. This type of device is ideal for removing mosquitoes in a summerhouse; you can easily take this product with you to nature or on a hike, to smoke mosquitoes out of a tent, just before going to bed.
In most cases, the packaging of any fumigators clearly states how long the toxic effects of the fumigator can be used so that the product does not become harmful to humans. It is important to understand that the active substances of fumigators are pesticides that can be absorbed by the human body, absorbed into the blood through the lungs, and then damage the liver. Therefore, it is important to use these products strictly for their intended purpose and with all precautions.
Doctors are convinced that any fumigator, as a mosquito repellent, will,
may only be harmless for a certain amount of time. But, when using such products for more than three hours in a completely closed (not ventilated) room, a certain excess of the toxic chemical will enter through our respiratory organs directly into the blood, poisoning the entire body.
Unfortunately, these drugs are also dangerous for allergy sufferers, since under certain circumstances they can cause severe urticaria, Quincke's edema and even an emergency state of anaphylactic shock.
Ultrasonic repellers
Small devices look like a radio. Powered by electricity and batteries. The action is based on ultrasound radiation, which repels mosquitoes, drives them out of the room, and prevents penetration. The device operates silently and can be installed in any convenient place.
Important!
There are no contraindications for use, but it is not recommended to place the ultrasonic repeller at a distance of 1 m from the head.
Modern ultrasonic repellers are produced in the form of keychains and bracelets. Often they combine several functions - a clock, a compass, a flashlight. Mobile devices are actively used in cars.
Effective devices:
- Tornado;
- Ximeite;
- Pest Reject;
- Aokeman;
- AO-110.
The price of the device is from 300 rubles.
About the use of electric fumigators
As already mentioned, electric fumigators should be used with both poison plates and cylinders with liquid poison very carefully, according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Due to the heat, the insecticide contained in the fumigator begins to gradually evaporate, causing the mosquitoes to simply die. It is believed that the maximum radius of action of a high-quality fumigator (among these could be called the Raptor mosquito repellent) is about twelve square meters.
The active substance with which the changing plate in the fumigator is impregnated, or which is filled into the cylinder, is called pyrethroid. This substance is considered a synthetic analogue of the natural poison pyrethrum or “Persian powder”, which has been known for its toxic properties since ancient times. Pyrethroid is considered a powerful nerve agent that has a lethal effect on parasites.
It is believed that this substance is generally safe for humans, although with prolonged use this insecticide can cause a severe allergic reaction in 12% of people. When choosing a fumigator, you should be sure to ensure that the device has detailed instructions translated into Russian. It is important that the instructions indicate the specific active substance and that a so-called fire certificate is available. After all, low-quality fakes made of soft plastic may well lead to a fire in the house.

Popular traps: models, characteristics and prices
You can find many types of electric traps in the store. The price of such devices depends on the processing area, overall dimensions, number of lamps, presence of gas cylinders in the kit, etc. Let's look at some popular devices.
Mosquito Trap MT-200
A Chinese-made mosquito killer, midges and mosquitoes, operating on the basis of a UV lamp that imitates human odor. For proper operation, the device must be suspended at a distance of 40-60 cm from the ground and a gas cylinder must be attached to it. Flowtron is also a very famous American manufacturer of traps. Users compare this model with traps from other manufacturers and have noticed that Flowtron is safe, reliable and works better than other devices. Plus, this model uses all sorts of baits to attract mosquitoes: CO2, chemicals, sticky strips, heat generation, flashing lights, suction -> more chances for a big catch!
Ultrasound to eliminate mosquitoes
Speaking about plug-in mosquito repellents, we cannot fail to note the presence of ultrasonic repellers on the market. These are devices that can be plugged into an outlet or run on batteries. It is believed that such devices emit a not very powerful ultrasonic wave, which makes mosquitoes uncomfortable in a given room.
For humans, such a wave is absolutely safe; people simply do not feel it at all. But for mosquitoes, this device produces a sound wave of a frequency that is similar to the sound produced by male mosquitoes directly during an alarm. Naturally, being frightened by such a sound, mosquitoes try to fly away from the source of unpleasant sounds as far as possible.
At the same time, it is important to understand that the idea of using ultrasound to get rid of mosquitoes was incredibly popular with numerous dishonest businessmen, who began to create hundreds of useless fakes for high-quality ultrasonic devices. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to actually determine whether the device is functioning or not. Don't be fooled and choose only high-quality mosquito repellents!
Concentrates
Professional product for exterminating harmful insects indoors and outdoors. Also used to treat areas against mosquitoes and ticks. They come in the form of powder, liquid, or emulsion. Used by specialists for disinfestation of large areas. Immediately before use, prepare a solution by adding the amount of concentrate specified in the instructions to cold water. Mix thoroughly and pour into a spray bottle. During work, you should use a respirator, protective suit, and rubber gloves.
They spray drains, sewer pits, garbage cans, entrances, basements, outside walls of the house, puddles of standing water, apartments, inside houses, outbuildings. The maximum effect is observed within 2 hours. The effect lasts indoors for 1-6 months, outdoors for up to 60 days.
Important!

Watch the video and see how the device works:
The ultrasonic mosquito repeller comes in different designs, differing in size, which can simplify a hike or trip to the forest, to the country house, etc. The smaller the device, the easier it is for its owner, since going out into nature usually requires a fairly large number of things. A compact ultrasonic mosquito repeller will make it easier to get ready and go on vacation.
Essential oils (bracelets and patches)
Mosquitoes are sensitive to odors: they are attracted by the smell of lactic acid contained in sweat, and are repelled by the smells of cloves, citronella, valerian, eucalyptus, lavender, geranium, mint, anise, camphor and cedar oils. You can drop essential oil onto clothes or into an aroma lamp indoors, but this is not always effective, besides, oils leave stains on things and in high concentrations can cause headaches. Manufacturers offer an alternative: bracelets and patches that emit the scents of citronella, geranium, lavender, and mint. They are suitable for children from two years of age and are in high demand among parents. Reviews about the effectiveness vary, but most likely this is a psychological protection for the parents’ nervous system: mosquitoes calmly land on the skin near the bracelets.
Know-how: sticker on clothes with citronella oil. You can apply up to six patches at the same time - the manufacturer promises protection for up to 12 hours. However, you can’t stock up on such patches for the whole summer. There are few reviews yet; the product has just appeared on the market.
