"Dana Spot-on" for dogs: instructions for use

Pets living side by side with people have long turned from just animals into family members. Many owners watch their dogs much more closely than they watch themselves, and there is a reason for this. The fact is that it is much easier for pets to get some kind of unpleasant illness than for us. They are constantly in danger: in particular, many problems arise due to infection with various ectoparasites, such as fleas, ticks, lice eaters, etc. These harmful insects not only cause inconvenience to our pets in the form of constant itching, but also destroy the animal’s skin and provoke the development of many serious diseases. Today on the veterinary market there are a large number of products that can completely cure the suffering of our furry family members. In this article we will talk about one of them: Dana Spot-on for dogs.

"Dana Spot-on" for dogs: instructions for use

When to use

All dosage forms of Dana are designed to combat ectoparasites. The drug is used for infection with the following types of arthropods and insects:

  • fleas;
  • lice;
  • lice eaters;
  • scabies mites, including otodectosis mites;
  • ixodid ticks;
  • demodectic mites.

The medicine is well suited for the prevention of entomosis and acarosis. It is especially recommended to use it during the period of activity of external parasites, that is, in the warm season.

Note! If there is a high risk of infection, for example, a strong spread of ticks, frequent walks in the forest, etc., it is recommended to combine the use of the drug in different dosage forms. When using drops, a collar, shampoo or spray will provide additional protection.

Features of application depend on the form of release of the antiparasitic agent.

Let's sum it up

The drug in question, “Dana Spot-on,” is an insectoacaricidal drug. This medicine quickly and effectively fights parasites that inhabit your dog's body, such as fleas, ticks, lice, etc. The harm caused by the medicine is minimal and only if you have not fully followed the recommendations of the manufacturer or veterinarian. Drops for external use

Dana drops for dogs are available in two versions:

  • Spot-on;
  • Ultra.

They differ from each other in composition. In regular Spot-on drops, the main active substance is fipronil. When an oily solution is applied to the skin of an animal, fipronil does not penetrate into the bloodstream, but accumulates in the fur, sebaceous glands, and epidermis. In this regard, it provides reliable protection. The effectiveness of this substance is achieved through its effect on the nervous system, in particular by blocking prescriptions. The solution is packaged in polymer pipettes of 1 or 1.5 ml, as well as bottles with a capacity of 15 ml. The latter option is well suited for owners who keep several animals. The bottle is enough for several treatments.

In Ultra drops, the effect of fipronil is supplemented by two more active components - thiamethoxam and pyriproxyfen. Since the composition includes several active components, the drug has a wide spectrum of action. The medication does an excellent job of destroying mature parasites, as well as their larvae and eggs. The solution is packaged in polymer disposable pipettes of various volumes - 0.4, 0.8, 1.6 and 3.2 ml. It is convenient to dose the medicine, since each pipette is designed for a certain weight.

Nuances of use

According to the instructions, Dan and Spot-on and Ultra drops should be applied to dogs in the withers area. For large pets, drops can be applied along the spine, but so that the animal cannot lick it off. Applying drops is allowed only to dry and undamaged skin.

The dosage depends on the version of the drug and the weight of the animal. If Dana Ultra is used, the dose for one treatment is calculated as follows:

  • up to 5 kg – 0.4 ml;
  • 5-10 kg – 0.8 ml;
  • 10-20 kg – 1.6 ml;
  • 20-40 kg – 3.2 ml.

Select pipettes of suitable volume. For animals weighing more than 40 kg, several pipettes must be combined.

Important! Usually the packaging indicates how much weight the pipette is designed for. When purchasing medicine, pay attention to this.

When using Dana Spot-on drops, the dosage is calculated as follows:

  • 2-10 kg – 1.5 ml;
  • 10-20 kg – 3 ml;
  • 20-40 – 4.5 ml;
  • more than 40 kg – 6 ml.

The medicine is applied when parasites are detected. To prevent infection, preventive treatment should be carried out on average once every 1 month. For otodectosis, 3-6 drops are instilled into the ear. If necessary, the treatment is repeated after 5-7 days.

pharmachologic effect

Therapeutic drops "Dana Spot-On" belong to the group of acaricidal phenylpyrazoles, obtained through chemical synthesis to destroy external parasites. It has long-lasting insecticidal toxicity and is used in the recommended doses to get rid of skin parasites.

The active ingredient of the medicinal solution is fipronil, which was first synthesized in 1987 and is characterized by the following features:

  • contact-intestinal mode of action;
  • the protective effect occurs upon contact with insects;
  • parasites do not have resistance (resistance) to fipronil;
  • effective and long-lasting residual protection;
  • selectivity (selectivity) of influence;
  • is broken down in the animal’s body and is quickly eliminated.

Did you know? Modern craftsmen were able to make the legend of Lefty come true and shoe a flea. One golden flea horseshoe by master Aldunin N.S. weighs 0.04419 mcg. You can fit 2,500 pieces of such horseshoes on a match head.

It is used in the fight against harmful insects - in veterinary medicine against pre-imaginal (before sexual maturity) and imaginal (sexually mature) stages of development of the following parasites:

  • fleas that feed on blood and cause allergic dermatitis;
  • lice that feed on blood and cause siphunculatosis;
  • lice eaters that feed on skin particles and hair and cause severe irritation of the epidermis and trichodectosis;
  • mites: sarcoptoid mites, feeding on lymph and dead epithelium, ixodid bloodsuckers and carriers of encephalitis and borreliosis, demodectic mites (acne mites), living inside or near hair follicles.

Exposure to fipronil leads to blocking of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid)-dependent receptors and disruption of the passage of nerve impulses in the plasma membranes of cells, which leads to paralysis and death of ectoparasites within 7 hours from overexcitation.

After treating the pet, fipronil is concentrated in the skin - the dermis, hair follicles and sebaceous glands, which causes a long-lasting protective effect. It is not absorbed into the blood and tissues of the animal, is metabolized and quickly eliminated from the body. Ectoparasites are unlikely to become accustomed to the drug.

Spray

Dana Ultra in the form of a spray contains fipronil and cyfluthrin. In this regard, the drug is successfully used not only for the treatment and prevention of entomosis in dogs, but also to protect animals from ticks and flying insects (mosquitoes, flies, etc.). The product is packaged in bottles equipped with spray heads, so it is convenient to use.

How to apply

If Dana spray is used for prevention or treatment, the actions are performed in the following sequence:

  1. Shake the bottle.
  2. Spray the product evenly over the entire body of the animal. Keep the spray head at a distance of 20-25 cm from your pet.
  3. If the hair is long, it should be lifted with your hand so that the medicinal solution penetrates the skin.

For 1 kg of weight you need 2-4 ml of spray. Calculating the dose is easy - one press is equal to 0.5 ml. Processing must be carried out outdoors. If this is not possible, be sure to open the vents or windows, and after completing the procedure, check the room thoroughly.

Note! Until the solution dries, do not let the animal lick it off. To do this, use a cervical collar, muzzle or braid.

Contraindications for use

Almost all insecticidal agents have contraindications and should be used with caution.

Caring owners consult a veterinarian before doing this. Dan drops against fleas cannot be used if:

  • kittens are less than 10 weeks old;
  • the animal is sick or weakened for other reasons;
  • Pregnant and lactating cats should look for another remedy;
  • there is an allergy to the components included in the composition;
  • the residual effect of the previous drug has not expired.

Thus, it is necessary to assess the health status of cats, do not exceed the dosage, and do not apply in parallel with other insecticides. If the animal is allergic, it is better not to drip the drug.

Collars

Collars are made in the form of a polymer tape. It is equipped with a convenient fastener. The polymer tape contains the following active components:

  • fipronil;
  • ivermectin;
  • pyriproxyfen.

The manufacturer produces three types of collars:

  • 40 cm – for cats, puppies and small breeds;
  • 65 cm – for medium breed dogs;
  • 80 cm – for large pets.

The main feature of collars is that they provide protection against external parasites and prevent infection by roundworms. For greater effectiveness, Dan collars are recommended to be combined with spray or drops.

Features of application

After unpacking, the polymer tape must be put on the animal like this. Do not tighten the collar too much; there should be a free space of 1-1.5 cm. Excess tape must be cut off so that there is no overdose. On average, the product lasts for 3 months, then you need to replace the collar with a new one.

If the animal has dirty and matted fur, it is recommended that you first give it a good bath and tidy it up. For severe flea or lice infestations, use a medicated shampoo. When carrying out water procedures, the collar must be removed.

Dana Ultra collar for dogs instructions for use

The effectiveness of the protection directly depends on how carefully and scrupulously the dog owner follows the instructions for use. Therefore, you should not neglect the recommendations of veterinarians and the manufacturer himself!

First, you need to open the original packaging and measure the strap to such a length that there is a gap of at least a centimeter between it and the dog’s neck (remembering to leave free ends for fixing with a buckle). After this, the collar is finally secured with a buckle, and its excess (protruding more than 0.5 cm) is cut off.

If this is not possible, immediately after putting the collar on your pet, you should thoroughly wash your hands with soap. In cases where there are deep abrasions and cuts on the skin of the hands, working without gloves is not recommended (components of the drug enter the blood, which is not very good).

Let us repeat once again: if your pet has too many fleas (ticks, lice eaters, etc.), it is recommended to first wash the dog with antiparasitic shampoo. Finally, in order to prevent re-infection when there is a large population of parasites in the external environment, it is necessary to carefully treat (or better yet, throw away and buy new) the litter, as well as care items, with solutions of insecticidal agents.

We strongly recommend that you carry out wet cleaning indoors using chlorine bleaches. If the dog is kept in an enclosure, saturated solutions of chlorine disinfectants should be used; it is advisable to thoroughly burn the boards and the ground under them with a blowtorch flame.

Note that in the case of ixodid ticks, the first two days after putting on the collar they can “stick” to the dog again, but after this time the parasites die and fall off.

The manufacturer writes that the use of “Dana” reliably protects the dog for four months. But at the same time, many breeders believe that the collar should be changed every three months, at least. Closer to four months, it protects the animal far less actively (especially in the area of the sacrum and tail).

Features when using a collar for small dogs and puppies

Note that using a collar for small dogs and puppies does not have any special nuances, but there are still some features:

In their case, “Dana” is guaranteed to “nurse” for almost the entire four months, or even longer. The pet's body area is small, and therefore the active ingredients are enough for the entire period of use.

If the remainder of the collar is packed in a sealed bag, it may be enough for one more time (provided that the animal does not grow much over the next four months, of course).

For medium and large breeds

As in the previous case, there are no special nuances when using the product for medium and large breeds, but you need to remember that the collar will not be able to protect the entire surface of the body by the end of the second month. Therefore, the collar should be removed from time to time and the pet should be washed with antiparasitic shampoo.

Shampoo

The main active ingredient in the shampoo is permethrin. Dana shampoo has the following effects:

  • destroys fleas, ticks and other insects;
  • eliminates unpleasant odor;
  • promotes wound healing;
  • relieves the animal from itching and other unpleasant symptoms;
  • improves the condition of the coat (after use, the coat acquires a healthy shine).

Bathing procedure

Use Dana shampoo for dogs as follows:

  1. First, moisturize the animal's skin.
  2. Apply shampoo, maintaining a dosage of 0.5-1 ml per 1 kg of weight.
  3. Lather the product and lightly rub into the epidermis.
  4. After 5 minutes, rinse thoroughly with warm water.
  5. Dry and comb the coat.

After bathing, you can additionally use drops or other dosage forms of Dan to ensure reliable protection of the animal from insects.

Chemical composition of the drug "Dana Spot-On"

Treating pets for skin parasites using drops is convenient and simple - you just need to cut off the tip of the dropper and squeeze the contents onto the skin. The manufacturer has taken care of the consumption rates for small animals, which eliminates complex dosage calculations - it is enough to know only the weight of the pet.

The effect of the drug occurs within 24 hours after application and lasts for 4–6 weeks from the start of treatment. During this period, the cat is protected and is not attacked by parasites, which die from contact with the treated skin of the animal.

The organization that developed the product is Russian.

The active ingredient in the chemical composition of the medicinal solution is fipronil (fipronil 50 mg), which destroys skin parasites, causing paralysis of the nervous system.

Excipients serve to improve the distribution of fipronil throughout the skin and reduce inflammatory processes:

  • isopropyl alcohol, isopropanol (disinfectant) - 300 ml;
  • dimethylformamide (dissolves chitinous membranes, affects the kidneys, liver, inhibits the nervous system of ectoparasites) - 100 mg;
  • citric acid (preservative) - 1 mg;
  • polyethylene glycol (binder base) - 1 ml.

Did you know? Even before our era, Aristotle was one of the first to describe the effect of sulfur as an insectoacaricidal agent to rid a person of lice. And the army of Alexander the Great used chamomile powder (pyrethrum) for these purposes.

Contraindications and side effects

According to the instructions for use, all dosage forms of Dana should not be used for dogs in the following cases:

  • for infectious diseases;
  • when exhausted;
  • during pregnancy;
  • during lactation.

Also, do not use the drug for puppies under 12 weeks of age. The medicine is also contraindicated in case of intolerance to the components.

Animals usually tolerate the drug well, but sometimes the following side effects may occur:

  • increased salivation;
  • vomit;
  • redness and irritation of the skin;
  • depressed state;
  • itching;
  • lack of appetite.

Similar symptoms can also occur with an overdose. If after treatment with the drug the animal feels unwell, it needs to be bathed. If a collar was used, it should be removed first.

Drug overdose

In case of overdose, the following reactions in cats are possible:

  • temporary lethargy and lack of appetite;
  • excessive salivation and lacrimation;
  • nausea, vomiting;
  • weakness and tremors in the muscles.

Symptoms may be short-lived and resolve spontaneously.
In case of complex manifestations, the drug should be immediately washed off with soap and water and contact a specialist to remove the product from the animal’s body.

Important! The insectoacaricidal drug "Dana Spot-on" is toxic to rabbits, bees, beneficial insects, fish and other organisms that constantly live in the aquatic environment (hydrobionts).

Owner reviews

Svetlana, owner of a German shepherd and a cat:

“I’ve been using Dan for my animals for two years now. I treat the dog with drops, and I buy collars for the cat. All last summer the animals had no fleas or ticks. This year everything is fine too. I'm satisfied with the result."

Maria, owner of the Rhodesian Ridgeback:

“Usually I didn’t notice insects on the dog, so I didn’t use any special products. But when after the walk we counted 19 ticks, we went straight to the veterinary pharmacy. We were advised to use Dana spray. We managed to get rid of parasites after the first treatment. Now we use a spray for prevention.”

Olga, owner of the Japanese Chin:

“In the summer, our dog moves to the dacha with us. We didn’t want to poison the animal with toxic drugs, so we decided to use Dana shampoo. No fleas were noticed, but ticks were still attached, so I also had to buy an expensive collar. After bathing, the wool becomes soft and acquires a pleasant aroma.”

Infection with exoparasites

Dogs and cats have long been home to fleas. It is even believed that this neighborhood is beneficial for both parties. A healthy animal has substances in its blood that inhibit the growth of parasites and slow down their activity. As a result, fleas do not cause any concern to the owner.

But as soon as the animal’s immunity decreases, the parasites begin to actively multiply. In this case, their population grows greatly and begins to cause only harm. This especially applies to pets. The pet begins to itch, suppuration may appear in the scratches, and the condition of the coat worsens. Young and old animals are especially affected by fleas. In addition, if a pet becomes infected with parasites on the street, they can get some kind of infectious disease.

This possibility is always present even for those animals that only walk in the yard. And if the owners take their pet to the forest or to the country, it can pick up more than just fleas. Exoparasites also include ixodid and ear mites, lice, and lice. All of them can carry infectious diseases and cause serious trouble to the animal.

Drops for nose, eyes and ears

A similar effect is obtained from eye drops used to treat diseases of the ears and nose. Drops with a green tint and an active component, as in other forms.

Inflamed eye in a dog - conjunctivitis

The composition contains water with glycerin. Available in 5 ml glass containers. Cardboard packaging with annotation inside. Indicated for use if the animal:

  • inflammation of the eye membrane in acute and chronic forms;
  • irritation of the nasal mucosa;
  • inflammation of the nasal passages.

This form of medication does not cause a negative reaction in the pet.

Rhinitis in a dog

Ear drops with a yellowish tint. Available in bottles of 5 and 10 ml. Excipients include water, castor oil, permethrin (insecticide), isopropanol and gramicidin (antibiotic). Prescribed for otitis of any kind, otodecosis.

Permethrin is an artificial pyrethroid that is dynamic in the fight against otodectosis pathogens. The action of the substance is to block the transition of nerve signals that are responsible for paralysis, the process of the dog’s movements.

The medication is easily tolerated by dogs, there are no adverse reactions. If individual elements do not suit the body, a response will occur in the form of irritation and scratching. In this case, further use of the drops is stopped.

How to give drops to a dog?

It is necessary to start the procedure when the pet is in a calm state. If the animal is restless, you should pet it and calm it down. Next, the dog, if it is small, is placed on your lap, a large dog is seated on the floor, with its back to the owner. Then the manipulations are carried out as follows:

  • the eyes are cleaned of discharge with a swab or bandage soaked in warm liquid or antiseptic;
  • spread the eyelids, the lower ones are pulled down;
  • The required number of drops is released over the eyelid.

It is necessary to start the procedure when the pet is in a calm state.

If necessary, the procedure is repeated. You also need to check whether the liquid has gotten behind the eyelid. After the manipulation, the dog should be held for several minutes. You should not allow her to touch her eyes with her paw or shake her head. The second eyelid is processed using the same scheme.

Compound

The composition of Dana Ultra drops includes the following active ingredients:

  • Fipronil. This is a new generation insectoacaricide, which differs from similar compounds in its high safety for warm-blooded animals, even with a very strong overdose.
  • Thiamethoxam. An insecticide of contact action, it is quickly absorbed through the chitinous cover of the body of parasites, causing convulsions, and then paralysis and death.
  • Pyriproxyfen. This compound has a pronounced insecticidal effect. It is interesting that most often this substance is not used in veterinary medicine, but... in agriculture, since it is actively used by pesticide manufacturers. Pharmacists became interested in this compound because it has a pronounced, destructive effect on the pupae and eggs of parasites, slowing down and completely inhibiting their development (as a result of which it no longer reaches the adult stage).

The following components are used as auxiliary components:

  • Dimethyl sulfoxide . This is a universal solvent, thanks to the use of which it is possible to achieve complete homogeneity of the medicinal composition (as well as its stability throughout the entire shelf life).
  • Twin-80. This compound is used as an emulsifier and stabilizer.
  • Isopropyl alcohol. Acts as a preservative.
  • Polyvinylpyrrolidone (polymer thickener and stabilizer) and polyethylene glycol (used for the same purposes).
  • Flavors.

The manufacturer indicates that in recommended doses the drug belongs to the class of low-hazard compounds. It does not have a toxic, teratogenic or irritant effect. The only caveat is that if the medicine gets into the eyes, mild to moderate irritation will develop.

But! The medicine is extremely toxic to insects, as well as to all aquatic organisms. Therefore, it is prohibited to dispose of it along with other household waste.

How do Dana Ultra drops work?

The drug contains components that, when applied to the skin, are quickly distributed over it, but practically do not enter the general bloodstream.

The product has a cumulative effect, since its components are deposited in the glands of the skin, and can also remain for a long time in the outer epidermal layer . Due to this, the manufacturer ensures a long-lasting effect of the drug.

Against “standard” fleas, the pronounced effect can last up to eight weeks. But the medicine can protect a dog from parasitic mites for a maximum of four weeks.

Veterinary principles of combating ectoparasites

To combat ectoparasites, several methods have been developed that are used depending on the general condition of the animal, and also the concentration of parasites on it. The main ones are:

  • Use of drugs internally.
  • Use of parenteral administration (intramuscular or subcutaneous injections).
  • External treatment - drops on the withers, use of insecticidal shampoos, collars.

Each of these methods has its own advantages and disadvantages; there is no ideal method. For example, injections are the most effective way to combat parasites, but they are toxic to the animal. External methods, that is, drops, are practically non-toxic for a dog or cat, but are not so active against parasites, as a result they must be used repeatedly to achieve a good result.

As for the more serious insecticidal preparations used, they are used only on the recommendation of a veterinarian. Therefore, for ordinary household use, if fleas are very annoying, simple products on the surface of the skin are sufficient.
