It is obtained from semi-coarse-haired animals and hybrids of coarse-haired and fine-wooled varieties. Such raw materials are used in the production of coarse carpets, shoes, felt, which is designed for installation in cars.

Preparation for dressing sheep skin

- Tanning - due to the quality of the fur, such skins are not suitable for the production of fur clothing, so suede and leather products are made from them.
Breed selection
Having decided on the main direction of the farm’s work, you can move on to choosing specific breeds of small cattle. Lincoln sheep breed

- Lincolnskaya. The wool of this breed is especially highly valued. It is distinguished by intense shine, special strength and length of hair fibers. The average yield of pure material is 55%. Priming is carried out twice a year. The average annual weight of wool from one ram reaches 8-10 kg. About 5.5 kg is shorn from a sheep. Lincolns are quite demanding when it comes to living conditions.
To obtain second-class raw materials, the following types of animals are bred:
- Corridel. These animals have coats that are completely white or with shades of beige. It is highly valued by buyers. The animals themselves are hardy and suitable for year-round keeping on pastures.
- Romney march. Hair also suggests high value. Of the initial cutting, about 60-65% remains after processing. The average volume of wool from one ram is 8 kg.
- Kuibyshevskaya. This is a native Russian breed. It also implies high levels of productivity. Up to 5.5 kg of wool is sheared from one male per year. During processing, about 56% of the original volume is retained. Sheep can withstand high temperatures.
- Tien Shan. This variety brings the owner up to 10 kg of crossbred wool per year. The length of its hairs is 12-12.5 cm. The yield after processing is 68-70%.
Stages of dressing
Sheep skin needs to be processed in several stages, each of which performs its own function. It is recommended to begin this procedure as soon as possible after removing the sheepskin so that the finished products are of high quality and have an attractive appearance.

Soaking
This procedure is carried out to soften rough sheep skin. It is recommended to carry it out immediately after removing the sheepskin, following the following sequence of actions:
- Prepare a deep container of suitable size and fill it with water at a temperature of about +18...+20°C.
- Add salt to the water (40–50 g per 1 liter of liquid), 1 tablet of furatsilin and about 2 g of any washing powder.
- Soak freshly removed skins in the prepared solution for 12 hours until they are completely covered with liquid.
- After the specified period of time, check the readiness of the skin for the next stage. If the sheepskin is not softened and the flesh is not scraped off, then the described sequence of actions is repeated again.
Flesh
After soaking, the softened sheepskin is laid out on a flat and dry surface with the fur down and the fleshing procedure is carried out. To do this, the smooth surface of the skin is treated with a scraper or a blunt knife, removing all remnants of meat, fat and films. During processing, it is recommended to move in the direction from the back of the sheepskin to its head.
Degreasing
The purpose of this procedure is the final removal of residual fat located under the skin of the animal. To degrease the skin, a special solution is prepared, the composition of which depends on the degree of fattening of the animal and the thickness of the fat layer on the sheepskin.

The main features of degreasing sheep skins are listed below:
- to prepare the solution, use moderately warm water (about +18...+20°C);
- degrease thin sheepskins with a small layer of fat with a solution of washing powder or laundry soap, using about 3.5 g of product per 1 liter of water;
- to degrease skins with a thick layer of subcutaneous fat, use a solution of 3 g of oleic acid and 12 g of soda ash dissolved in 1 liter of water;
- place the prepared sheepskins in a container of suitable size and pour the solution for 30 minutes, stirring the sheepskins throughout this time;
- rinse the fat-free sheepskins in cool water and squeeze them out thoroughly, and then beat them with a wooden stick from the fur side;
- The surface of the flesh is then wiped dry with a soft, clean rag.
Pickling
This stage is called so because the word “pickling” comes from the English word “marinate”, and the procedure itself allows you to make the sheepskin more flexible and soft. Thanks to this, the skin can later be used for sewing fur clothing, carpets and bedspreads.
Step-by-step pickling algorithm:
- Prepare a solution of 9% table vinegar and water mixed in a ratio of 1:2. For each liter of the resulting mixture, add 40 g of salt.
- Fill a suitable container with the resulting solution. Immerse the skins in the mixture for 5-12 hours until they are completely covered with the solution.
- Remove the sheepskin from the container with the mixture 5 hours after soaking, fold it in four and sharply squeeze along the fold lines. If, after unfolding the skin, a clearly visible light cross appears at the folds, then the procedure is considered successful. If there are no marks at the bends, continue pickling.
- To neutralize the vinegar solution that has soaked the sheepskin, you need to soak it in a soda solution for 1 hour (10 g of substance per 10 liters of water).
- At the end of pickling, rinse the skin in clean water, washing away the remnants of all solutions.
Soaking in a soda solution reduces the strength of the hide, but as a result of this procedure the sheepskin becomes hypoallergenic
Tanning
Unlike pickling, this procedure is carried out to enhance the strength of sheep skin. To achieve the desired effect, sheepskin must be treated with a solution that contains a natural fertilizer for the skin - tannin. This substance has a good tanning effect and makes sheepskin resistant to damage.
Important! To neutralize the unpleasant odor emanating from sheepskin, you need to add alum to the tanning solution (7 g per 1 liter of mixture).
The step-by-step mechanism for the tanning procedure is described below:
- Place 500 g of oak or willow bark in a container with 2 liters of water. Bring the mixture to a boil on the stove, and then simmer the solution over low heat for half an hour.
- Remove hot mixture from heat. Leave it to settle for 24 hours, and then strain, adding 8 liters of water and 0.5 kg of salt.
- Place sheep skins in the prepared tanning solution for 1–2 days. You can also apply the mixture to the surface of the flesh using a brush.
- After 48 hours, cut a piece from the sheepskin and examine the color of the cut through a magnifying glass - it should be uniform.
- Dry the skin for 1-2 days, and then treat it with a soda solution (as with pickling) to neutralize the effect of the salt mixture.
- Rinse the sheepskin in clean water. To make the fur softer, you can apply a little shampoo to the outer surface of the skin, and then rinse thoroughly with water.
Zhirovka
To make sheep skin soft and elastic, it should be soaked in a special fat emulsion. You can prepare the mixture for greasing in various ways, and you only need to apply it to the flesh using a cotton swab or brush.
Step-by-step recipe for preparing fat emulsion:
- Grate 100 g of laundry soap and place it in a container of a suitable size.
- Pour 1 liter of water into a container with soap and cook the solution over low heat until the soap is completely dissolved in the liquid.
- Dissolve 1 kg of pork fat in the hot mixture. After the mixture boils, remove the container with the solution from the heat.
- Add 10 ml of ammonia to the hot mixture. The emulsion is ready.
If during the greasing process the emulsion gets on the fur, the stained area should be immediately cleaned with a cotton swab dipped in gasoline.
Drying
The final stage of preparing sheep skin is drying it. This procedure takes about 3 days, and the optimal temperature for drying sheepskin is approximately +30°C. During the drying process, the skin should be periodically kneaded with your hands and slightly stretched to make it softer. If dry white spots appear on the surface of the flesh, they must be treated with a scraper.
Primary processing of wool
Immediately after shearing the sheep, the owner of the farm receives raw material. This is unwashed wool. There are two ways to implement it:
- Delivery of the entire volume of raw materials to procurement enterprises. In such institutions, wool is washed and processed, and in processed form it is sent to textile factories. The cost of raw materials is quite low.
- Independent processing of raw materials. In this case, the material is processed on the farm and sold to factories without an intermediary. The benefits are much higher.
Of course, the second option requires additional purchase of equipment and the formation of a production line. The specific configuration of such a line will depend on the wishes and capabilities of the owner. But the minimum equipment it includes includes specialized washing machines and dryers.
