Anyone who wants to use the drug Tiuram against cockroaches should think carefully about what is more harmful: insects in the house or a very toxic insecticide. Whiskered parasites spread infection and scatter pieces of chitin throughout the apartment, which can cause allergies. It is very difficult to destroy them, so strong poisons that are dangerous to all living organisms are often used to exterminate unwanted guests.
Basic information about the drug
Thiuram is a white or gray crystalline powder that is almost odorless. It is used in the rubber industry, in the manufacture of tires, to enhance vulcanization.
Because of this, the drug received the name – tire or cable powder. Melts at a temperature of 150°C. Poorly soluble in water. Soluble in alcohol, acetone.
By chance, Tiuram was discovered to have fungicidal properties, that is, it is able to suppress the spread of fungi and fight pests. The drug helps well in the fight against cockroaches.
Properties
This is a dual-action universal drug. The composition of FAS against bedbugs includes substances that have different effects on different types of pests. Therefore, its effectiveness increases after careful treatment of various surfaces. Fas is also an acaricidal agent and can be successfully used by gardeners to control plant pests, so the range of its use is quite wide. It is very effective in the fight against such pests:
- bedbugs;
- fleas;
- flies;
- cockroaches;
- Colorado potato beetle;
- caterpillars, aphids;
- whiteflies;
- ants, etc.
Release form
The poisonous agent is produced in the form of powder or granules. These can be packages from 15g to 1 kg. The toxic drug should be kept away from food, children, and pets.
Ekaterina, Novosibirsk region:
“We bought an apartment that had a lot of cockroaches. We decided not to get involved ourselves. They called in the professionals. They asked what product they use. They told Tiuram. I found it on the Internet, and it turns out that now you can use it yourself.”
Composition of the poisonous agent
Thiuram is a very poisonous drug. The main active ingredient in the composition is pinerobutoxide, which is classified as a high-risk substance.
When working with it, you must use protective equipment and follow safety regulations.
Pinerobutoxide significantly increases the toxic effect on insects, which makes the use of the drug effective.
Thiuram quickly decomposes under the influence of ultraviolet rays and is highly soluble in organic solvents.
Boric acid
From time immemorial, boron powder has been used in folk recipes for fighting cockroaches. This product can be easily purchased at a pharmacy; it is an antiseptic, but it has a negative effect on the six-legged pest, leading to its death.
The powder is scattered along the baseboards, near the trash can, and into an empty sink. You can put it in lids and pour in water (while excluding any access to the rest of the water) or make special baits based on it, with the addition of eggs, flour or sugar, and place it on tables and work surfaces.
You will not notice the result immediately; it will take a couple of weeks before the insects leave your home. This disadvantage is offset by the advantage that using boron powder is a safe method of controlling cockroaches: you do not need to leave your apartment, pack your things, or wear a respirator when working with it. Borax powder, which is a salt of boric acid, is used in a similar way.
It is recommended that after expelling insects, for prevention, sprinkle the powder near the air vents and under the sink.
Serafima 37 years old
About once every year or two I notice a cockroach in my kitchen and immediately buy boric acid. Even as a child, I learned from my aunt that cockroaches cannot tolerate it, and now, if necessary, I always sprinkle the powder on a piece of cardboard on the table with a little sugar at night. The ideal combination of price and result.
The mechanism of action of Thiuram on pests
The method of exposure of a toxic agent is contact. Cockroaches must eat Thiuram to become poisoned.
Next, the product affects the nervous system of household pests, blocking protective enzymes. The transmission of impulses is disrupted, which leads to paralysis and death of the parasites.
The chitinous shell ceases to form on the cockroach’s body. For some time the insect still moves normally, this is considered an advantage of the poisonous agent.
Since the pest is capable of transmitting particles of the poisonous drug to its relatives, who took refuge in a shelter and did not try the bait.
Varieties of dusts
Cockroach powders are produced by domestic and foreign manufacturers. The active components used are identical and are divided into several groups.
- Nerve agents. They enter the insect's body through contact. They block the transmission of nerve impulses, causing paralysis, convulsions, and death. The active components of this group of powders are peritroids. These include permethrin, deltamethrin, lambda-cyhalothrin, cypermethrin. As well as organophosphorus substances - dichlorvos, chlorpyrifos, chlorophos, karbofos.
- Acute intestinal drugs. They disrupt the functioning of the digestive system and nervous system. They enter the body of insects through the esophagus. These include substances from the group of pyrethroids and organophosphorus compounds. Boric acid and borax have only intestinal effects.
- Dehydrating agents – diatomaceous earth. Ecokiller is a prominent representative of this category of drugs.
On a note!
Powders and dusts against cockroaches are convenient to use; insects do not necessarily need to eat them. It is enough to run along the scattered path.
Purchasing the drug
This toxic substance is not registered as a means of killing cockroaches, so it cannot be found on open sale. In the Soviet Union, the sale of Thiuram was prohibited.
It is not sold in stores or hardware markets. This product is used in tire shops, rubber and cable factories. You can try to get it from production.
There is a certain danger of buying a fake, since you won’t be able to distinguish a quality product; you can only hope for the honesty of the sellers.
You need to be wary if Tiuram is offered for free sale under its real name. It is not permitted for sale as it is a substance dangerous to humans.
It is quite possible that Thiuram powder with a completely different composition is commercially available. The manufacturer used the “promoted” name.
Through online stores they order a purchase, as a chemical reagent; in some stores they sell “Cable Powder” in small packaging or the “Thiram” product weighing up to 1 kg.

Vladislav, Izhevsk:
“20 years ago there were an enormous number of cockroaches, and no matter what they starved them to death, it didn’t help. They disappeared for a while, then appeared again. Hands dropped. Now strong chemicals have appeared, they have freed homes from these parasites. I think, even if it’s a strong chemical, it’s not scary to kill it 1-2 times, but then wash everything off, and there are no more cockroaches. I killed everyone at the dacha with Tiuram, and I also got rid of the ants. An excellent remedy, it helps against everyone.”
A powerful weapon against pests – from the factory to the home
Thuram was added on an industrial scale to cable windings to repel rodents, since tailed parasites constantly gnawed everything in their path, disabling many systems. It was also used as a vulcanization additive in the production of rubber products. Therefore, the product is also called cable or tire powder.
It was tetramethylthiuram disulfide (thiuram) or TMTD that had a terrifying effect on many animals and insects throughout the entire operation of wires and cables in plastic, rubber or fabric windings. An unusually toxic substance that is not addictive.
Someone accidentally used this supplement to remove cockroaches at home and noticed 100% effectiveness within a few hours. And the bonus was that even after several months or years, winged pests avoided the treated area.
Some craftsmen poured the powder under baseboards, linoleum or parquet, providing themselves with many years of protection from unwanted neighbors. But this substance killed not only insects, but also harmed the health of all warm-blooded animals, therefore, today pure thiuram (tetramethylthiuram disulfide) is prohibited for sale.
Methods of application
Poisonous Thiuram is used as a powder and solution. The powder simply scatters in places where domestic parasites accumulate, along areas of their movement, near water.
Since the powder is odorless, it will not attract cockroaches. It won't be effective. It is better to mix a little sugar into the powder to attract arthropods.
Some manufacturers give recommendations on the packaging of the drug on how to prepare a poisonous solution.
Mix the package, approximately 15 g, with raw chicken yolk, then apply to the intended areas. This is convenient to do with a brush or sponge. Hands must be protected with rubber gloves.
Preparing the premises
To increase the effectiveness of using a toxic drug, it is necessary to properly prepare the room before treatment. It will be easier to do general cleaning later.
Before treatment with Thiuram you need:
- Place small items, books, clothes, toys in plastic bags;
- place food in the refrigerator;
- wrap the dishes and put them in locked cabinets;
- move furniture away from the walls to reveal nests of parasites and free access to baseboards and corners;
- close the doors, windows, ventilation openings (if this is not done, the cockroaches will go to neighboring apartments, wait there for the time of action of the toxic substances, and then return again);
- take away children, elderly people and pets;
- carry out wet cleaning, this will remove debris.
It is necessary to identify places where parasites accumulate in order to treat such areas. This can be easily determined by the numerous feces they leave behind.
Preventive measures
Thiuram can also be packaged like this
To prevent the appearance of these insects, it is necessary to regularly clean the apartment and take out the garbage. Wash dishes instead of leaving them in the sink, remove crumbs from the table. Protect ventilation openings with a special mesh. If you have troubled neighbors, then for preventive purposes it is worth using more gentle insecticides (aerosols, pencils) that will scare insects away from your home. It is these simple and inexpensive preventive measures that will reliably protect you from uninvited guests. If it doesn’t help, then you’ll have to use aggressive chemicals.
Room treatment methods
A thin layer of powder should be sprinkled on the baseboards, including hard-to-reach places. Particular attention is paid to gaps, cracks, and pipe joints.
It is advisable to nail the baseboards tightly so that insects do not have the opportunity to move freely between apartments.
Next you need to treat the facing panels, wallpaper, tiles, spaces behind radiators, refrigerators, and cabinets.
All carpets, upholstered furniture, rugs are also treated. You need to thoroughly sprinkle the insides of sofas and armchairs (armrests and side joints).
Cockroaches often run along walls and ceilings. It is better to treat vertical surfaces with Thiuram solution.
To do this, apply it to a wide brush or foam sponge. In this way, you can apply a liquid solution to the inner surface of carpets, lubricate door frames, the bottom and back of cabinet furniture.
Particular attention is paid to places:
- near the trash can;
- kitchen sink;
- ventilation grilles;
- the space behind the toilet;
- door jambs.
Place sheets of paper with poison applied in the cabinets. The instructions do not recommend removing them for 2 weeks. During this time, cockroaches will hatch from the eggs and taste the poison.
After finishing the distribution of the toxic substance, you need to take off your protective clothing and wash. The face should be rinsed with plenty of running water, as the powder can enter the respiratory tract, especially if a mask is not used.
After treatment, you need to leave the room for about 24 hours. After returning, you need to wash the apartment with baking soda and soap.
Vacuum the furniture to remove any remaining particles of the toxic substance. Ventilate the room. You can leave the poisonous agent in small crevices, cracks, but in inaccessible places. This will prevent parasites from re-entering the apartment.
There will be a lot of dead cockroaches in the apartment. They must be removed with extreme caution, because they contain large amounts of toxic substances.
Care must be taken to ensure that children do not touch them and that pets do not try to eat them.
Precautionary measures
When working with Thiuram, one should not forget that it is a very toxic substance to all living organisms. The toxic agent has the strongest effect on children, pregnant women, and the elderly. Symptoms of Thiuram poisoning are:
- dizziness;
- migraine;
- vomit;
- attacks of nausea;
- pain in the eyes;
- increased lacrimation;
- memory impairment.
Before treatment, you need to protect your body from exposure to aggressive substances. It is necessary to wear work clothes, disposable rubber gloves, a protective mask for the nasopharynx, and special glasses. It is advisable not to leave exposed skin areas.
If a toxic substance gets into your eyes or skin, you should wash your hands well with soap and water, then rinse the affected area with plenty of water.
Konstantin Nikolaevich, Ufa:
“Too much trouble with Tiuram. The product may be good. But there are many problems. It’s difficult to get, it’s difficult to process an apartment. Poisonous powder for humans. I have two cats, they love to climb everywhere, I’m afraid for them. There are other drugs. Previously, there was nothing, so they starved the cockroaches with whatever they had to. Now there is a lot of choice, you can find another remedy.”
Use of Thiuram for prevention
The drug Thiuram is toxic. If there are people or pets in the room, then it cannot be used, even for preventive purposes.
But it is very convenient to use this toxic substance on weekends or when the whole family goes on vacation for several holidays. For Tiuram, 24 hours is enough to have a detrimental effect on domestic parasites.
For preventive purposes, Tiuram powder or solution should be applied to a sheet of paper (this will make it easier to remove later) and spread out in certain places.
Be sure to insert it into the ventilation grille and leave it in the entrance door opening, near the balcony door. Place it around the perimeter of the apartment, under upholstered furniture.
In the kitchen, sheets of paper should be under the refrigerator, near the trash can, under the sink, near cabinets, in places where they constantly accumulate.
After returning, sheets with toxic contents must be collected and wet cleaned. If you carry out such prevention once a month, then cockroaches will stop looking into such a house.
Everyone decides for themselves how to deal with domestic parasites. But this must be done, because they are carriers of many dangerous diseases, for example, tuberculosis.
Powder danger
Thiuram against cockroaches is dangerous for animals and people.
Processing must be carried out very carefully and carefully. If you inhale the air in a room in which only half a gram of thiuram was sprayed per 1 sq. m., a person or pet will receive severe poisoning requiring hospitalization. Pregnant women, elderly people and children should absolutely not be in an apartment or house where treatment with this poison is planned. Pets, including aquarium fish and other reptiles, should be removed from the premises. The instructions describe the precautions that a person should take, as well as what can happen if there is thiuram poisoning. The powder must be stored in places that children and pets cannot find.
If there is constant exposure to the drug, people experience the following symptoms:
- frequent headaches,
- memory impairment,
- tears and pain in the eyes,
- disturbance in the mucous membrane of the nasopharyngeal system,
- the occurrence of pathologies of the female cervix.
Interesting!
Scientists conducted studies in which women who used tiuram in the house took part. Among the total, it was found that 11.4% of women had a precancerous condition. Experiments conducted on animals showed that the functioning of all organs was disrupted. In cats, the DNA changed; in pigs, a month after contact with the powder, toxins were found in the tissues.
Most often, this product is used by professionals due to its high toxicity. The insects understand how dangerous the drug is to their lives, and the surviving cockroaches tend to leave the apartment. Thiuram powder against cockroaches is an effective effective remedy. But without the necessary knowledge and protective equipment, it is not recommended to use it.
