Invasion
For the second time this year, my mother-in-law called from Altai and complained about an invasion of forest bugs. Their first unexpected visit happened at the end of April, and now they came again, both times not one by one, but in a crowd. The first time she complained about the sanitary services, since people could not get rid of bedbugs on the balcony on their own, and they were not in a hurry to help.
Now the people have learned to deal with uninvited guests, and have realized that this phenomenon is temporary and does not pose a threat to health. And I began to wonder - why did they rush into the city? Here they live quietly in the raspberries, they don’t encroach on our territory. Here's what we found out.
Variety of parasites
There are several types of bedbugs that settle inside an apartment or on a balcony. Often these are forest and bed ones.
They differ in appearance, size, and harm humans in different ways.
Forest bugs are considered quite common guests; they infect balconies, corners, baseboards, and interior spaces. The reasons for the appearance are:
- high air temperature;
- cold snap;
- flood.
- typhus;
- smallpox;
- tuberculosis.
- the presence of 4–5 bites in one place;
- itchy skin;
- finding insect eggs;
- the bed has dark spots and a specific smell.
Favorable factors for the reproduction of unwanted guests is heat. The total number of attacking parasites often reaches several dozen. They feed on the sap of plants, so the presence of flowers in the house promotes the settlement of parasites and active development. Otherwise, uninvited guests stay for a short time. The forest bug does not harm humans.
As for bedding insects, they pose a great danger not only to people, but also to pets, being blood-sucking.
A bite can transmit serious diseases:
Living creatures and lack of light are considered favorable factors for the development of bedbugs. They begin their activity in the evening, at dusk.
Their appearance is characterized by certain signs:
It is not uncommon to see bedbugs crawling, especially if you get up at night.
Residents of Samara: “They smell like bedbugs, but they also fly”
Residents of apartment buildings fight swarms of insects unknown to them
..And in a cheerful crowd the animals rushed into battle,
but when they saw the barbel, the animals gave chase.”
With the onset of summer, all known and unknown representatives of the fauna crawl out into the light of day. Many of them are quite cute and are more likely to attract rather than repel. Others, on the contrary, seem disgusting to us. The creatures that we encounter for the first time bring the most problems. Especially if they allow themselves too much: they get into our homes, into our things and products. But who they are and whether they can cause harm remains to be found out. Not everyone has ethnology textbooks. And what kind of textbooks can there be when an unknown enemy is operating on your territory, under your nose?! “No time to argue, just strike”! As it turned out, many readers of Samara News are guided by this principle.
One of them is Samara resident Yuri Styagin. This week he called our editorial office and reported strange insects that had recently appeared in his apartment:
- This is a real invasion! – Yuri Vladimirovich shouted into the phone. “I lived in this world for sixty-three years, but I never saw anything like this before I retired.” They are similar to household bugs, only they are oblong and tough - you can’t just crush them. When you pick them up, they immediately release a protective smell - a stench like bedbugs. Only unlike those, they also fly.
At first, the story of the excited pensioner seemed incredible to us. But as soon as our correspondents arrived at the scene, it became clear that the reader was not deceived.
Face to face
Yuri Vasilyevich met us at his house No. 41 on the street. Maurice Thorez. Together we walked a few meters and stopped near the nearest entrance.
“Here they are,” the man pointed to the stone surface of the house. Small black dots ran across it. We took a closer look at them: dark brown insects with wings, not very pleasant to look at.
“I first noticed them three years ago,” said the pensioner, rising with us to his floor. – As soon as the heat starts, there’s no way to save me from them! They climb into closets, into linens, into beds, and most often into cracks between window frames, where they nest. The worst thing is that no one can explain to me what they are called and what to expect from them. I tried calling management companies, but they just laughed at me. All hope is now on you.
In the apartment, Yuri Vasilyevich clearly showed us his little “neighbors”. Flocks of winged insects lay dead asleep between the window frames. Styagin caught another part of their brethren before our arrival and gave it to us for identification in a glass jar.
Before leaving, we talked with other residents of the house on Maurice Thorez. The neighbor of our new acquaintance, Galina Eskova, on whose balcony we found a lot of these insects, and Oksana Borisova, who lives in the next entrance, complained about the brown “reptiles.” Two random apartments - two complaints. This meant that the problem was not local, and it was time to seek advice from entomologists.
Client identified
So, what are these vile creatures that breed in countless numbers and poison the lives of our readers? We hasten to reassure you - this is someone Arakatus elm (aka elm bug) from the family of earth bugs or ground bugs. Refers to pests of elm seeds.
— Distributed in Southern and Central Europe, optimal conditions for its development are in the forest-steppe and steppe zones of the Samara, Saratov, Volgograd, and Astrakhan regions. One generation develops per year. It feeds mainly on developing and ripened elm seeds on trees and fallen seeds. It reaches high numbers in urban areas and forest belts where there are elm plantations. In the Samara region, after wintering, adult bedbugs appear in the first half of May and lay larvae. Therefore, their mass migration occurs in July. This year they are experiencing high growth. They fly into houses and living quarters in search of a favorable microclimate, places for wintering, and light through open windows, vents, and balconies. Mainly in the evening and at night. They do not pose any danger to humans, they do not tolerate diseases,” concludes the entomologist, head. Department of Chemistry and Plant Protection of the Samara State Agricultural Academy, Professor, Doctor of Biological Sciences Vladimir Kaplin.
Where do the fears come from?
There is no danger, but there is hysteria due to the massive appearance of elm bugs. As soon as we raised this issue on our website, numerous reviews from desperate subscribers poured in in response. All of them have already encountered these insects and now they don’t know what to do next - they say, if you drive this bastard out the window, it climbs into the door. And dichlorvos does not take it, and other aerosols. But in general, there is no reason to poison the space around you.
“Most people have a disgusted attitude towards insects,” says psychologist Olga Derenko. – This is not a phobia, but a kind of borderline state between normality and pathology. Since childhood, we have been told that mosquitoes, bedbugs, cockroaches, etc. are bad. Over time, we get the impression that most insects are pests. And take the Buddhists: their culture has a caring attitude towards all living beings, so they are not afraid of any insects, even unknown ones. In many ways, we are driven by the fear of the unknown, when we don’t know how this creature will behave. And yet, when you see an unfamiliar insect, it is better not to panic, but to obtain information about this creature.
Comments
Irina Dyuzhaeva, zoologist-entomologist, associate professor of the department of zoology, genetics and general ecology of Samara State University, candidate of biological sciences:
— If you plant an elm in your yard, expect insects to appear that feed on it, including elm bugs. It’s normal that there are a lot of them this year. The outbreak in numbers is facilitated by favorable weather conditions: warm winters, hot summers with periodic rains. Recently, the weather has been consistently dry and hot, so they are more common, no surprise. You just need to wait it out; at the end of summer they will die naturally. I'm simply amazed at all this hysteria. People encounter a species of insects unknown to them before and panic. And all because of basic ignorance. If a person does not have the Internet, let him look at the library and look through gardening magazines. Moreover, nowadays give everyone chemicals and poisons. But in this way they poison, first of all, themselves.
Methods of penetration of bedbugs
Insects can appear at home in various ways - external and internal. The first are characterized by the following:
Public transport is one of the sources of bedbugs in your home
The internal routes of penetration of bedbugs are:
The accumulation of insects can be large; they infect the corners of rooms, cracks between baseboards, walls, and on the ceiling.
Effective means to combat
For chemical treatment of garden plots, insecticides of various types are used to influence insects. There are three groups of drugs:
- contact (upon contact with a bug, they penetrate through the skin or shell into the pest’s body and destroy it);
- intestinal (getting into the stomach of the bug along with food, destroying the digestive system and infecting the insect);
- systemic action (contact-intestinal).
The choice of drug depends on the degree of insect damage to the area and the period of plant protection.
Name of the drug | Type of effect on insects | Speed of action of the drug | Plant protection period |
Caesar | contact | from 10 minutes | from 2 to 3 weeks |
Fatrin | contact-intestinal | from 15 to 30 minutes | 2 weeks |
Boreas (dangerous to bees) | systemic | 24 hours | up to 30 days |
Chord | contact-intestinal | from 15 to 30 minutes | 7 days |
Zolon | contact-intestinal | from 1 to 3 days | up to 20 days |
Tager | systemic | from 3 to 5 hours | from 7 days |
When using pesticides, it is important not to allow the drug to come into contact with mucous membranes, to follow the safety standards specified in the instructions and how to use the solution. Forest bugs always live in conditions that are as comfortable as possible for their existence. If the situation changes, they often find shelter in a person’s home
The stink bug's bite does not pose any danger, especially since it is not capable of biting a person at all. If bedbugs from the street crawl into your house, then don’t panic

Since they feed on plant foods, once in a home environment, window bugs can settle in indoor plants and gradually destroy them. In this case, it is necessary to clear the apartment of uninvited guests. The easiest way is to throw them out an open window.
There are several methods to combat forest bugs:
- collect manually when the area is slightly contaminated;
- use infusions, which must be made on the basis of mustard and onion peels; they will have to be used to treat the plants several times;
- spray the plantings with karbofos, chlorophos or phosphamide.
Karbofos
Knowing how to get rid of stink bugs, you should choose the safest and most effective methods, and also take into account that there are no highly targeted drugs for their destruction.
The following options are considered the most popular:
- In a residential building, you can use a folk remedy that contains dishwashing liquid and nicotine. It is necessary to crumble a pack of inexpensive cigarettes, add warm water (2 liters) and leave for several hours. After this, add dishwashing liquid to the resulting solution, mix thoroughly and strain.
- A drop of hot paraffin from a burning candle will help quickly neutralize the beetle, and simply heated wax has the same effect.
- In a vegetable garden or orchard, you can use the drug Fufanon Nova, which successfully repels bedbug attacks on cultivated plants and prevents the pest from multiplying. However, such a remedy is not used in an apartment.
- Women's hairspray perfectly seals all the breathing and smelly holes on the shield bug's body.
- Since the stink bug breathes through the pores on its body, you can try to neutralize the insect before it has time to release its smelly liquid using ordinary water. To do this, you need to fill the container with water, dissolve soap in it and quickly throw the bug into this solution.
The liquid, which is toxic to the beetle, will not allow it to empty its odorous glands and will save your home from an unpleasant odor. After some time, when the insect dies, the solution can be poured into the toilet.
Since the stink bug is not one of the insects dangerous to humans, there are no chemicals whose action is aimed specifically at its destruction. Therefore, the fight against it should only begin if the number of insects begins to increase sharply, which can lead to serious consequences for your garden plot.
Causes of insects
Many factors contribute to the development of bedbugs. Knowing them, you can promptly prevent the appearance of insects in your home.
The main reasons for the spread of some species is the large amount of vegetation. You can get rid of them by planting black cohosh among the flowers.
Another cause of parasites can be a flood, fire, or severe frost. Because of this, uninvited guests infect apartments, balconies, infect corners, furniture, and often live in insulation in winter. For preventive purposes, windows and doors should always be closed tightly; after a walk in the fresh air, clothes and pets should be inspected.
Often parasites crawl from neighbors through doors, sockets, and cracks in the ceiling.
In order not to provoke the development of a large number of insects, the causes and the bedbugs themselves should be dealt with in a timely manner. For this purpose, special disinfectants are used, but traditional methods are also effective.
Means to combat midges
An integrated approach is effective for solving many problems. To really cope with the task and get rid of midges for a long time, you need to approach this problem from two sides:
- destroy those insects that are already in the apartment;
- remove their source or prevent new midges from entering your home.
Popular articles What can be used instead of tiles on a backsplash?
Obviously, fighting only those insects that you see will not give the desired result. If the cause of their appearance is not eliminated, the midges will appear again.
Getting rid of flying midges
The easiest and fastest way to remove midges is a vacuum cleaner. It is especially effective to use it in places where they accumulate. But when emptying the vacuum cleaner of collected debris, you need to take care that they do not fly back out. And it’s better to throw this garbage away not at home in a bin, but in a container on the street.
You can make a variety of traps for midges. There should be small holes in them, into which midges will fly, but will not be able to fly out. The bait can be rotten fruit or something sweet. For example, you can turn a bottle of some sweet wine into a trap, leaving a little of it on the bottom, or a cup of yogurt, attaching a simple plastic bag with holes to it and putting bait inside the cup. The caught midges are then washed off with water.
You can also hang Velcro to catch flies. If you did not immediately take action, and there are a lot of insects, you can use special chemicals to quickly destroy them. It is most effective to spray or place them in places where midges are most concentrated.
Eliminating the cause of midges
To get rid of midges on the balcony forever, and to protect yourself from the appearance of a new swarm of midges in the near future, it is not enough to simply destroy those that already exist, you need to find their source. First, carefully inspect the balcony, look into all the cracks and other secluded places, check the boxes with vegetables, if there are any. Having found what served as a breeding ground, throw it in a trash container outside the apartment.
Elimination of forest parasites
How to get rid of insects? It is very important to do this without harming yourself, family members, or pets.
To exterminate parasites, special methods are used, which depend on the number of “guests” on the balcony of the affected apartment. If a small amount is found, you can use a vacuum cleaner or wipe it off with a rag, throwing it away from your place of residence. Covering the window sill with a cloth soaked in vinegar and installing a mesh helps prevent the reappearance of insects.
When the number of bedbugs exceeds a hundred, they fill not only the balcony, but the entire room, more serious measures should be taken:
The main food of forest bugs is vegetation. Therefore, you should regularly inspect your indoor flowers. An effective defense is to scatter fragrant herbs on the balcony or wash the floor with wormwood.
Forest bugs are harmless to humans, so you can eliminate the parasites yourself using insecticides and folk remedies.
Precautionary measures
When black bugs appear, first of all, it is necessary to clear the space as much as possible from unnecessary things. It is recommended to carry out all manipulations wearing protective gloves. You cannot bring anything infected into the apartment from the loggia, otherwise the insects will spread throughout the apartment.
Blood-sucking small bugs multiply exponentially, so it is best to pack unnecessary items in airtight double or triple bags and tie them tightly. Then they need to be thrown into a trash can on the street. If there is an armchair or sofa on the balcony that you are not going to get rid of yet, it is best to treat it with steam or insecticides.
Steam generator treatment kills bedbugs
At the last stage, it is necessary to vacuum all areas of the loggia, then do wet cleaning. It is advisable to add ammonia to the water for rags. You will need two teaspoons per liter of liquid. Before closing the door to the balcony and going into the apartment, you should treat the entire space with “Executioner”, “Raid” or other drugs.
You can enter the loggia only the next day. At the same time, it is necessary to re-clean with a vacuum cleaner and treat with ammonia. To accurately get rid of insects on the first or last floor, it is recommended to spray all possible corners and places where uninvited guests gather with special means.
Black beetles that appear on the balcony can cause a lot of unpleasant moments. Some of them are absolutely safe and cannot cause any harm to humans. And other small bugs, such as bed bugs, are very dangerous to humans. You can deal with them on your own, spending just a few days destroying them.

Elimination of street parasites
In addition to forest insects, street insects cause significant harm to humans and domestic animals. They are often carriers of dangerous diseases, so when they are detected, certain actions must be taken in a timely manner.
There are special organizations to eliminate insects, and you can also kill bedbugs yourself with insecticidal solutions. The street parasite spreads quite quickly, as a result of which the entire area of the apartment, balcony, furniture and carpets have to be treated with toxic agents.
The main habitats of insects are:
The fight against bedbugs will be highly effective if all residents of the entrance join the process.
In what cases does an apartment need to be re-processed?
After you have treated your sofa against bedbugs using improvised means at home, the parasites die within a month. It happens that insects adapt to chemicals. The percentage of survivability in this case exceeds 93%, both adults and eggs remain.
When sprayed directly, individuals die after 30 - 40 minutes, mass destruction occurs after 2 - 3 days.
During this period of time, the parasites spread throughout the apartment, move along the poisoned floor surface and receive their dose of poison. Young individuals die 2 weeks after disinfestation - larvae that hatch from eggs also die. If capsule formulations were used during processing, the validity period is extended by 30 days. Such drugs have a longer activity - they can work over a long time.
Do not panic if insects appear again after treatment - wait another 2 weeks.
Repeated treatment with stronger poisons is carried out in the following cases:
- new bites continue to appear on the skin;
- the habitat has changed: insects have moved from the bedroom to the living room or nursery;
- the home was re-infected: through ventilation or on clothing;
- self-hypnosis on the subconscious - it seems to the apartment owners that the pests have not disappeared anywhere.
If you do not adhere to the rules of disinfestation, not all eggs will die the first time. The preparation may have been carried out incorrectly or the nest may have been missed when the poison was sprayed. The second option: the wet cleaning was done too quickly, the poison had no effect.
If the sofa is old, you can fight bedbugs using a more effective method: you need to remove the upholstery, and after treatment, the upholstered furniture is reupholstered with new material.
Those who survive develop immunity to the agents, which is passed on to their offspring. Secondary disinsection is carried out in several steps, it is best if the work is done by professionals. The algorithm looks like this:
- the level of infection is assessed;
- the most dangerous areas are identified;
- food and personal items are removed from the premises;
- small children, animals and adults, except the exterminator, leave the apartment;
- the furniture is moved to the center of the room - passages to the walls must be open;
- the chemical composition is prepared;
- spraying is carried out.

The specialist closes the windows tightly, and you can ventilate the room after 3 hours (according to the instructions). Next, wet cleaning is carried out.
This method allows you to permanently clean a piece of furniture from parasites.
Advice! The room will have to be cleaned for several days after the procedure - the bedbugs will crawl out of their hiding place and die. You can collect half-dead or dead bloodsuckers with a vacuum cleaner.
How to protect your home from pests?
It is better to prevent the occurrence of insects than to eliminate them. But still, if bedbugs appear on the balcony or inside the house, you must follow simple rules:
If bedbugs occur on a balcony or apartment, it is best to seek help from a special service than to fight it yourself.

Destroying a visible nest
Removing a wasp nest if it is within an accessible distance can be very easy. You should act in the dark, when the wasps are inactive and everyone returns to the house for the night, or early in the morning, when they have not yet managed to get out
Application of the method requires special care; errors in operation can lead to an attack by an entire swarm. It is necessary to use a beekeeper's suit or helmet, clothing that insects cannot pierce with their stings
- You can get rid of a wasp nest on the balcony, if it hangs from below, with boiled water. You will need at least one bucket of liquid. They carefully sneak up and pour out the water. If necessary, repeat the procedure several times. After a couple of days, the nest is calmly removed and destroyed in a convenient way.
- The second method with water involves using hot or cold liquid. You can fight wasps in this way if it is not difficult to get to it. A stepladder is often used. Fill a bucket with water, bring it to the nest, and slowly lower it into the water. The entrance will be immediately blocked, since it is located at the bottom of the house. Leave the bucket for at least 15 minutes. During this time, the entire family dies. Carefully remove and destroy.
- A bag of poison is one of the most convenient ways to fight. Spray any insecticidal agent, not necessarily with a high concentration of poison, just use an aerosol. A minimal dose of poison is required to kill wasps. Several sprays of aerosol, close the bag tightly. Then throw it over the nest and secure it with tape on top. The procedure should be done in the evening. Lack of oxygen already negatively affects the body of insects; the presence of poison guarantees quick death. To be sure, you should leave the package for a couple of days.
- You can remove a wasp nest on the balcony using a vacuum cleaner. Point the tube into the entrance and turn on the household appliance at full power. After 20 minutes, remove the nest, remove the bag from the vacuum cleaner, and immerse it in the water for 15 minutes. Humanists release insects away from their own homes.
- Every evening, install a spiral on the balcony near the nest, which is used to repel mosquitoes. After ignition, an insecticidal substance is released along with the smoke. One spiral burns for 2 hours. Smoke forces the bird to leave the nest, and in the process of breathing, poison enters the body.

Reproduction
After hibernation (April-May), insects move to places where they have enough food. It will not be difficult to determine what forest bugs feed on, since their accumulation is greatest in places where young trees and the first green spaces grow. Their main product is vegetable juice.
The new offspring of insects are in close proximity to forest restaurants. Under favorable temperature conditions, the female can lay eggs twice a season on the inside of the leaves.
The forest beetle reproduces without leaving its feeding area. The female lays hundreds of eggs on the leaves and stems of plants and holds them so that each egg is difficult to remove with a fingernail.
The development of the egg takes about 10 days, after which the larva emerges, which is similar in appearance to the adult, but has a smaller size and a slightly different color.
The transformation of the larva into an adult takes about 30 days. During this time, the future forest green beetle will have time to shed several skins. The larva goes through five stages in its development. An adult insect has a body length of about 15 mm.
