Equipment with protection against ticks and mosquitoes
Suits designed to protect against insects are divided into two categories:
- Anti-mosquito - to combat flying blood-sucking insects, mosquitoes, horseflies, etc.
- Antiencephalitis - to combat ticks.
The main danger with a bite is the possibility that the insect was a carrier of the disease. The most common types of infections: encephalitis, borreliosis, tularemia - serious diseases with serious consequences. This, as well as dozens of other diseases, can be contracted in the Russian forest between April and September. Simply put, protection will be needed for the entire season.
To help fishermen, hunters, tourists and simply lovers of outdoor recreation, special equipment was developed. Practice has shown that the most reliable protection is a combination of well-thought-out equipment with various means, repellents or acaricides.
Note!
A distinctive feature of the new suits this season is improved tailoring with an abundance of traps, but no anti-mite impregnation.
Photo: what a tick looks like at different stages of development
When starting the fight against arachnid parasites, you need to find out what they look like. Representatives of different species have a number of individual characteristics, but common signs are noted that make it possible to recognize the pest:
- 4 pairs of paws;
- absence of antennae;
- Not all ticks have eyes, but it is still difficult to see them during a quick examination without a microscope;
- lack of wings (ticks do not fly);
- the head, connected to a powerful oral apparatus, is best viewed from the abdomen; in representatives of many species, it is also visible from the back;
- body shape oval, flattened or convex.
The body color is discreet (brown, dark red), but there are also brighter individuals (green, blue, yellow, black, white). To be able to distinguish between ticks and mosquitoes, bedbugs, it is recommended to look at the photo.
How does insect repellent work?
Classic set of equipment: trousers with a jacket. Every small detail is important, from inconspicuous color to the selection of materials, and also do not forget about the presence of traps. The purpose of the suit is to prevent parasites from reaching the skin and biting.
Protection is worked out at several levels:
- Make a person less noticeable. For this, natural colors are selected: khaki, sand, olive, coffee, various shades of green or brown. Spotted and camouflage colors work well, but they have a significant drawback - it’s difficult to see small animals against a colorful background. Therefore, whenever possible, choose a solid-colored outfit.
- If the insect is already on clothing, do not let it inside. To do this, firstly, the entire outer part is impregnated with a protective compound that paralyzes the tick. Secondly, traps are provided from which the paralyzed insect can no longer escape. To combat mosquitoes and midges - a flow net.
Various materials are used, both 100% cotton and mixed varieties. Your main task when choosing equipment is to suit the weather. When it’s hot, choose lighter options, don’t forget about thermal underwear. If you are not equipped correctly, you will quickly sweat, and uninvited guests will be drawn to the smell.
What is the difference between workwear and hunting or fishing clothing?
The main objectives of clothing used during hunting: discreet colors, comfort of movement. Fishing suits must perform a protective function. They prevent underwear and underwear from getting wet. An anti-mite suit is used for another purpose - it prevents parasites from biting a person. This is achieved in different ways:
- special clothing completely covers the body;
- There are protective elements inside the sleeves and pants that prevent ticks from getting under the material;
- in the production of such products, special materials with a smooth surface are used, on which ticks cannot move;
- special elements are also provided that serve as traps - bugs get inside;
- Thanks to the use of a protective suit, the tick is less able to detect the smell of a person’s body, which may prevent it from detecting a new victim.
Requirements for anti-tick clothing
Workwear must meet a number of requirements:
- During production, only dense fabric is used that parasites cannot bite through;
- Only closed models of suits and overalls should be considered for purchase: the material should cover the limbs and body;
- preference is given to models that fit tightly to the neck;
- clothes with buttons and snaps are inferior to zippers, since in the first case there is a risk of parasites getting under the shirt;
- there should be no large cutouts;
- the anti-tick overalls are equipped with cuffs and muffs, so that the sleeves and legs fit snugly to the body;
- Despite the fact that dark camouflage colors (green-brown) are more suitable for forests, it is recommended to consider suit models made of light fabric, as this will allow you to quickly detect ticks on the fabric.
What exactly are anti-encephalitis suits equipped with?
Throughout its history, humanity has been fighting insects, so many different methods and means have already been invented and tested. Next, let's look at the most effective techniques that have migrated into modern equipment:
- One-piece cut. The jacket is an anorak, that is, it is worn over the head, since there is no central zipper. In general, the number of any fasteners is minimized, including holes for ventilation of the axillary zones in this case are not recommended.
- Thick, wear-resistant fabric. Simply put, this is a material that cannot be bitten under any circumstances.
- A hood with a mosquito net is the most classic protection option. Helps against flying insects, protects the face and head.
- The outer cuffs, the bottom of the jacket, and the bottom of the trousers have a thick elastic band to prevent them from crawling under clothes.
- Protective skirt on the inside of the jacket. Unlike the windproof version, this skirt is made wide and tucked into the waistband of the trousers. Even if an insect gets under the jacket, it bumps into the protective skirt and cannot get through further.
- Double cuffs on the sleeves and legs - similar to the skirt, these cuffs fit the limbs tightly, without folds, preventing insects from getting inside.
- Paralyzing agents. It is important that the entire surface of the gear is treated because you never know where a tick will land. After contact with the product, time should pass, on average 4-8 minutes, during which the pest will be completely immobilized.
- Trap folds on sleeves, trousers, hood, torso. If the insect has already landed on the equipment and received a dose of paralytic, all that remains is to finally slow it down. To do this, fabric folds-traps are placed throughout the clothing, into which the tick will somehow crawl, moving upward. The inside of these traps is made of fibrous material and impregnated with acaricide. As a result, the living creatures are completely paralyzed, over time they simply fall off and die.
Important note about products and impregnations
Even if the suit has already been treated, it is useful to have the product at home. This impregnation can last for different times, but on average – 10-15 washes. This is not so much, and without treatment the suit will lose a considerable part of its protective properties.
It is not necessary that your equipment has absolutely all the declared features. For example, protective skirts are not that common, and the number of traps varies from suit to suit. However, the more protection options, the better.
Products for reprocessing protective suits
The duration of the protective coating applied at the manufacturer is 3 years. After this, it is necessary to re-process the clothing. The owner of the suit can use the following means:
- Repellents are drugs that repel blood-sucking insects with their smell.
- UltraThon lotion is a product that helps prevent the penetration of parasites. It contains a polymer that slows down the evaporation process of the active ingredient.
- Acaricides cause paralysis in mosquitoes, mosquitoes and ticks. The products contain alphacypermethrin, which has a toxic effect.
- In the forest, you can use insecticidal compounds that are intended for application to hiking equipment.
Important! The treatment procedure with potent drugs must be carried out in an open room. Consider the expiration date of the drug used to protect the suit from parasites.
To protect against ticks, midges and mosquitoes, you can use an anti-encephalitis suit. Manufacturers use traps that are located in the folds of the suit. The special coating can destroy dangerous insects within a minute.
How to Wear a Suit for Effective Protection
There are few basic rules, they are easy to remember and intuitive. Let's outline the most important thing:
- Tuck your clothes: jacket into pants, pants into socks, and everything else that can be tucked into something. Don't give parasites a single chance to get to your skin.
- Don't forget about processing. When purchasing a suit, immediately check whether it has impregnation; if not, buy it and treat it yourself. Regularly update the impregnation, whether it is factory or homemade. Don't forget to treat trap folds as well.
- Don’t skimp on equipment: cheap suits costing fifteen hundred are so cheap because they are of little use. Truly effective equipment does not come cheap.
Follow these simple principles, then your outdoor recreation will be fun and safe!
Rules for choosing a wardrobe for going outdoors
When going to the forest, you need to protect yourself and your children from possible tick attacks. The first step is choosing the right clothes, and you need to pay attention to the following:
- clothing should be as closed as possible - exclude open areas on the body, tucking pants into boots, shirts and T-shirts into pants. The top should have long sleeves with tight-fitting cuffs. Avoid deep necklines, undone buttons, and bare bellies in clothing;
- it is important to use a headdress - it can be a hat, cap, scarf, hood; It is very difficult to find a tick in your hair, so it is better to collect it in a bun and hide it under a hat;
- shoes must be closed - sneakers, sneakers; It is better if the shoes are high (for example, rubber boots) so that you can tuck in your pants, but you can also wear high socks and pants with an elastic band at the end;
As a rule, ticks fall on people from bushes and blades of grass, so it is necessary to protect the lower part of the body as much as possible
- the material of things is also important - dense fabric or dense coarse weaving, so that it is more difficult for the parasite to bite through it;
- It is better to choose things in light colors, this way you can quickly detect parasites and shake them off;
- It’s good if the clothes have a zipper, and not buttons or rivets, into the gaps of which a tick can crawl.
Even in protective clothing, you should avoid walking or resting in tall grass and bushes, as this is an ideal habitat for ticks. Once on a person, ticks move from bottom to top in search of a place of penetration to an open area - the neck, armpits, head.
After returning from a walk in nature, you need to carefully check your belongings and body for ticks. If a parasite is found on clothing, remove it, making sure there are no bites. If a tick is found attached to the body, you should immediately consult a doctor, as self-removal may result in its head remaining inside.
