Do-it-yourself anti-mole windmill: diagram and construction instructions

It is difficult to meet owners of summer cottages or household plots who would not encounter such a problem as the appearance of moles. Most owners do not want to deal with chemicals, which are already used in abundance. Therefore, they use quite simple but effective devices that repel these underground diggers. It should be noted that mole repellers can be bought in stores, as well as made with your own hands from improvised, and sometimes unnecessary, materials on the farm.

Homemade repellers

To make simple mole repellers, it is permissible to use various materials, sometimes unnecessary. For example:

  • Empty plastic bottles will do.
  • Cans.
  • Alarm clocks, both mechanical and electrical (electronic).
  • Radio receiver and speaker.

As a rule, making repellers from the first three components does not require much intelligence; it is enough to be patient and eager.

Advantages of using a turntable

During the hunt, the animal is capable of digging up an area even in a short period of time. A bottle spinner for repelling moles will scare them away and protect existing crops.

Interesting! From experience, some summer residents know that underground inhabitants cannot tolerate various noises.

For example, this could be the sounds of an alarm clock, knocking on metal, or plastic crackling. Since the goal is not to destroy the guests, the trap will solve the problem in a humane way.

Repellers made from plastic bottles

A bottle placed on a pin is the design of the simplest repeller. The same structure can be made from empty beer cans. The pin must be stuck into the ground so that the vibrations from the repeller are transmitted into the thickness of the earth.

Interesting fact! An iron pin is much more effective than a wooden one, since metal transmits sound waves better.

A windmill against moles is a more complex design. To make it you will need a beer bottle with a capacity of up to one and a half liters.

It is important to know! A high-quality repeller can be made from an ordinary beer bottle with a narrow, elongated neck.

To make a windmill, you need to have some more tools, such as scissors, a marker, a self-tapping screw, a nail, an awl and a pin (stick). As a rule, there are no ready-made diagrams and drawings, since the device is quite simple. In addition, there is a video where you can clearly see, frame by frame, the methodology for making such a repeller.

  1. You need to cut off the bottom of the bottle along the line that can be found on the bottle.
  2. The cut bottom should be turned upside down, resulting in the shape of a five-pointed star. Use a marker to mark the areas to be cut. A section is cut out from the center of the bottom, both in the middle of the “star” beam and along the depressions located between the beams.
  3. The same operation should be carried out on all rays. The result should be a kind of propeller. After this, a hole is punched in the center of the bottom. Since the product is intended for rotation, the hole should not have burrs. In addition, the diameter of the hole should be slightly larger than the diameter of the screw.
  4. This propeller is screwed using a self-tapping screw to the bottle cap (the same one), and strictly in the center. To simplify this task, first make a thin hole in the lid. For reliability, the self-tapping screw is fixed on the inside of the lid with a kind of nut made of any material.
  5. From the bottom of the bottle neck, 2 holes are made strictly opposite each other.
  6. At the final stage, the windmill is taken and secured to a wooden stick, after which the entire structure is stuck into the ground where necessary.

Under the influence of wind force, the structure makes an unpleasant sound, which negatively affects moles. The advantage of the design is that the windmill turns automatically, depending on the direction of the wind.

To drive the mole away from the site, it is enough to make a simpler design. To do this, you need to take a plastic bottle and simply place it on a wooden stick. Below you can see what this design looks like.

You can enhance the effect of such a design if you bury a metal pipe in the ground at a level below the molehills. After this, a pin with a windmill is installed in the pipe. To prevent this pin from dangling, it is fixed in the pipe. It is better if the design works regardless of wind direction. To do this, special blades are cut into the sides of the bottle and bent outward.

Tin repellers

Many summer residents, going to their dacha in the summer, stock up on beer in metal cans. After the beer is drunk, many summer residents throw them away, but in vain! After all, they can be used to make an effective mole repeller.

And again, you can start with the simplest option, when the beer can is simply put on the pin. The jar is light enough, so it begins to make sounds at the slightest wind. If you take a rope and sort of string the jars on it so that they touch each other, like a garland. This garland can be mounted on two pins made of wood or metal. The most difficult option is the spinner.

Products made from such scrap materials are light, simple, but effective.

In the photo below you can see a more complex design of the repeller.

Not everyone can install such a mechanism, although in fact it is not that complicated if you study it in more detail.

Pest lifestyle

Before you start fighting moles, it is important to familiarize yourself with the life characteristics of the pest. It is known that moles live in families. Therefore, if one individual was discovered in the garden of a private house, garden or dacha, then there is no need to have any illusions. In the best case, several relatives live with it, and in the worst case, 2-3 families.

Animals make extensive underground passages, which, according to their purpose, are divided into two types:

  • Moves for searching for prey . They are located in the fertile layers of the earth, since this is where the food of moles lives - earthworms and insect larvae. A voracious animal cannot exist for a long time without food, a maximum of 10-15 hours.
  • Wintering passages for animals . They are located deep underground and protect animals from bad weather. Moles do not hibernate, so they need a place protected from the cold to survive the long winter.

Moles are predators; their food is only of animal origin. They do not eat root vegetables, as some gardeners believe. And if remains of plant fibers can be found in their stomachs, then they get there by accident.

Moles feed on invertebrates, mainly earthworms. In addition, they even bring certain benefits by eating woodlice, slugs, click beetle larvae, caterpillars and mole crickets. The soil in areas where moles live is usually loose, soft and moist. Although they damage the root system of plants, they do so unintentionally.

In search of food, animals dig new passages. In conditions of food shortage, moles are capable of attacking frogs, small vertebrates and even rats. Animals are in great need of water, so they settle near water bodies. Moles have developed intelligence and are able to adapt to different circumstances.

Animals are very dexterous and strong. Due to constant exposure to darkness, the organ of vision of moles has atrophied during evolution, since they practically do not need it and even get in the way. If the eyes were preserved in their usual form, then earth would always fall into them. Animals compensate for poor vision with acute hearing and sense of smell.

Moles are frightened by any loud sound or unpleasant odors.

Alarm clock repeller

To be effective, you need to have several alarm clocks that have different alarm times. Alarm clocks are placed in jars, which are closed with lids and installed in different places on the site. The best option is to bury containers with alarm clocks in the ground. As a result, after a certain time, all alarm clocks underground will start to go off stably. Sounds regularly made in the area will force moles to look for more comfortable places.

The second option consists of a pipe buried in the ground into which an alarm clock is placed on a string. Thanks to the rope, such an alarm clock can always be taken out of the pipe.

On a note! Alarm clock repellers are the most effective. As a rule, battery-powered alarm clocks are better suited because they don’t have to be constantly adjusted like mechanical ones.

What you need for work

The advantage of a plastic bottle repeller is that you will need a minimum set of tools and materials. Anyone can work with them, and purchasing them is not a problem at all. You can see this for yourself. Here's a list of everything you'll need:

  • plastic bottle;
  • steel rod or wooden stick;
  • stationery knife or scissors;
  • drill with a drill (in some cases this is not required).

That's the whole set. Are you surprised? It’s not worth it, because for all its simplicity, the mechanism works flawlessly. You just need to connect it all into one device.

Note! The device is automatic, but only works from the wind. In calm, windless weather it will simply be useless.

The difference between homemade and factory models

Industrial repellers are made on a completely different principle: they work based on the generation of ultrasound. As a rule, the most effective models are not from domestic, but from foreign manufacturers. Japanese repellers are usually praised.

As for homemade repellers, moles quickly get used to them and can build their holes next to such windmills. The most effective of them are alarm clock-based devices.

Alternative methods of getting rid of moles

In addition to homemade devices for expelling pests, there are also industrial options.
For example, an ultrasonic repeller. The device looks like an ordinary stick with batteries inside. The device generates ultrasonic waves that are not perceived by the human auditory analyzer, but are annoying to pests. One of the most successful solutions will be the Tornado-OZV 02 repeller

In the photo, the ultrasonic repeller TORNADO OZV.02

The underground inhabitants begin to panic due to constant mechanical and ultrasonic vibrations.

  • The sound source itself is located at a depth of 20 cm, which eliminates the noise effect above the ground.
  • Soil is a denser medium, so sound waves propagate better in it and reach a radius of 2 km.
  • The device is made of impact-resistant materials that are resistant to dust and moisture. The device operates for 3 months on one set of batteries.
  • The price of the Tornado repeller is 1200 rubles.

Printed circuit board

Due to the impossibility of manufacturing a printed circuit board for a mole repeller using chemical technology, a mechanical method was used to remove sections of copper foil from foiled fiberglass laminate.

The location of radio components on the printed circuit board of the mole repeller is shown in the photo below.

The appearance of the printed circuit board for manufacturing by photochemical method and the location of radioelements is shown in the photograph below.

The board can be made from 1.5 mm thick fiberglass foil on one side.

A site visitor, who introduced himself as San Sanych, kindly provided his version of a rodent repellent printed circuit board, laid out in the graphic editor for PCB layout Sprint-Layout 3.0R, for which many thanks to him.

Manufacturing technology

The basis of the accessory is a wire frame, onto which a petal cut to shape and processed along the contour is strung and a load core. In the front part of the structure, the wire is twisted into a loop, which will subsequently serve as a place for attaching the bait to the cord. The core is made of bronze or brass by drilling a hole along the entire body for the wire frame. This part can be made composite, from several elements, which allows you to add a sound effect from the contact of parts of the core during wiring to the main characteristics of the attachment. The wire frame behind the core is also twisted into a loop, having previously inserted a winding ring into it to secure the tee. By manipulating the shape of the petal and the mass of the core, the spinner is given the required animation characteristics.

How to scare away birds

A windmill made from a plastic bottle must be movable to scare away birds. The simplest and most budget option is a turntable. It does not require additional costly motors and batteries, because it runs on air movement. But it needs blades to catch the wind. You can make several options for such garden helpers. For example, like this.

Cut an ordinary plastic bottle in the center into four sections that can be bent without separating the parts from the whole.

Then, bending the blades so that they catch the wind, pieces of foil are glued onto them. You can use self-adhesive mirror film. It is also necessary to cut a hole in the bottom that is suitable in diameter. The finished windmill bottle is placed on the remainder of the plastic pipe or the handle of a mop. The bottle should rotate freely when the wind blows, but not dangle too much, otherwise rotation will not work. The remainder of the pipe should be long enough for the birds to see the pinwheel.

You can make a windmill from a plastic bottle with your own hands in this version - cut long blades from the base of the bottle, bend them at an angle of 45 0. The turntable diagram is shown below.

Such a windmill is mounted on a rigid base at right angles to the ground. You can secure it in any way - using a nut, if the base is threaded, using a large smooth bead, making a loop on the wire with pliers. There are many options; the master decides which one is more convenient to use. The most important thing is that the turntable rotates freely. Some craftsmen attach several of these devices to one base, decorating them with colored film or painting them with acrylic paints. The result is not only functionally useful, but also a beautiful thing for a personal plot.
